We all have goals and dreams, but often one thing after another gets in the way of accomplishing what’s most important to us.
It happens to everyone from time to time. We come up with all kinds of excuses about why we didn’t get things done.
When it comes to achieving an important goal, we’re often our own biggest obstacle.
The path to getting things done and realizing your goal, big or small, becomes easier with an intentional plan. Your plan doesn’t have to be perfect. Avoid making excuses and go for it; you’ll be happy you did.
By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to more easily realize your goal.
1. Identify What You Want to Achieve
Sometimes we complicate this too much initially. Don’t worry about having a perfect plan in a pretty binder. Write down in simple language what you want to achieve.
Make your goal as big or small as you want; all goals benefit from a simple plan. Having a simple vision for your goal will help motivate you to achieve it.
2. Prepare a Rough Outline of Your Next Steps
Once you know what you want to achieve, prepare a rough action plan or outline for what you believe the next steps to be.
Maybe achieving the plan will take weeks, months or even years; that’s okay. Keep your long-term goal in mind and focus on the next 90 to 180 days.
Your outline may not be complete; that’s okay too. If you are going to move forward, ask yourself, what are the several things you must do first? What’s the first critical thing you need to do to get it off the ground, and then what’s the second thing? It’s likely that you already know what the steps are intuitively.
And if you need more ideas, you can always go to the Internet to find other people who have done something similar and learn from them.
3. Hold Yourself Accountable
This is critical! When you make a commitment, do whatever possible to stand behind it.
This will be a great signal to those around you, in both your personal and professional life. Be the right kind of leader; it will pay off.
4. Move Forward and Take Action
This is an action plan. The operative word is “action.” So start doing what you need to do first to realize your dream or goal — and start now.
Once you’ve accomplished that first step, move on to the next thing. The more you work at it, the clearer the next steps will become.
5. Evaluate Your Progress and Make Adjustments
Every 30 days, take stock of what you’ve accomplished. Are you on schedule? Did you forget anything?
And as you evaluate your progress, don’t neglect to give yourself a pat on the back. You’re moving forward and taking action — and that’s a good thing. You’re further along than you were before.
As you work your plan, you’ll quickly discover that there were steps and actions you missed and things you didn’t anticipate before you were really involved.
That’s okay; it’s to be expected. Just add the steps required and move on.
6. Celebrate Your Victories, No Matter How Small
We often forget to give ourselves grace or slack in this process. Take time to celebrate little victories along the way. You deserve it.
Go After Your Goals
I’m always amazed by how gifted people are. You have great things inside you that are waiting to be accomplished.
Just take the simple actions needed and keep moving forward. Many people don’t, but you can choose to be different. Just go for it!
